Fuel Pump
In December, 2007, out on a snowy mountain pass, our van sputtered and died like it was was out of gas — and then wouldn't start. We guessed it was a problem with the fuel filter, or fuel pump.
We found that we just barely had cell coverage, and managed to call AAA. Our experience with AAA was great — we told them we had a 4x4 full-size Ford van and so we required a flatbed tow truck. One arrived within an hour, chained up, and got me into town. Our (standard plan) AAA covered the cost of the tow completely.
We were then stranded for 3 days in Burns (a tiny town in rural eastern Oregon) waiting for a new fuel pump to be shipped out from Portland. Considering all the outback unpaved places we like to visit, we're at least glad the fuel pump decided to die somewhere halfway populated.
FYI, our custom Transfer Flow gas tank uses the stock Ford fuel pump.
