[Update: As of March, 2006, a different priest is in charge, and the family is once again allowed to give tours of San Borja.]

The story about why Jose is locked out of San Borja

: Went there last fall and had a very nice but somewhat unusual experience. The family that lives in the house closest to the mission does not have any authorization from the Mexican govt to give tours. The govt has taken over the restoration and had a caretaker there who lives in the white block house that is farther away from the mission but next door to the rancho that is also there. Upon our arrival, a young man about 16-18 yrs came from the rancho and said the mission is not open and is locked up but offered to give a tour of the orchard and show us the hot spring. A little time later a man drove up from the white house, its only a couple hundred yards away, and introduced himself as the caretaker. He had keys to the mission and gave us a very nice tour of the facility. Apparantly, there is a rivalry between the government caretakers and the rancho family. The caretaker we met had been in some altercation with several of the families men and ended up in the hospital last year. In any event, the mission is quite a site to see and is an easy side trip to visit. But you will need to find the caretaker if you want to get in. Good luck.

>>> The issue is not the government, but the new Catholic priest in Guerrero Negro... Jose and his family are NOT Catholic, so the new priest put new locks on the mission and assigned a Catholic man to show the insides... Pretty dumb, as the same God is worshiped.

Here is Jose and family at San Borja...
